At the age of 23 I received a basic income--a widow's pension--from the British Government which changed the course of my life. Until then I had led a life outlined by society, not myself, and without realizing the cause, I felt depressed and listless. My life centered around trying to fill the inner void.
The basic income --just 2 dollars a day for just a few years--gave me the freedom to hitchhike around, follow whatever caught my fancy and gradually get to know that spark of interest which gives ones life a sense of meaning, places one in ones personal strength and allows one to find ones own path in life.
Since that time my life has changed. I, formerly an unashamedly self-centered person, now act from a place of personal power and feel so fulfilled that I wish others to follow what makes their own hearts sing. The basic income has made my life worthwhile and changed me into someone with a strong sense of social responsibility.
As a psychologist, I have seen many of my clients make similar transitions. I have come to believe that all of us, if allowed to follow what makes our hearts sing, will feel benevolent toward all that life brings. Our world desperately needs us to mature and feel responsible for the world we create and the natural environment that nurtures us. A basic income not only helps people to grow into physically healthy human beings it empowers us to become mature and wise stewards of socieity and the natural environment. _________________ Author, public speaker on global community building, the all-win principle, the UN: tools and techniques for personal growth, peaceful conflict resolution, and global lobbying.
